Contactless sensors called Beat Boxes are placed on lampposts around . Players walk, cycle or wheel between Beat Boxes collecting points as they go. There are two ways to play - hovering a Beat the Street RFID card at the Beat Box, or by using our Beat the Street mobile app.

Players record journeys and score points around in a bid rocket up the leaderboard and win prizes!

You can play as little or as much as you like, every journey counts! The Department of Health recommends 150 minutes of activity a week for adults. This works out as 30 minutes a day for five days a week. All children and young people should engage in moderate to vigorous intensity physical activity for at least 60 minutes and up to several hours every day. Every time you visit two or more Beat Boxes you help your health, add to your team’s points and the overall community challenge total. Every journey counts so see how far you can travel over the course of six weeks!

All players over the age of 13 should create an account via our website or our App (available on the App Store or Google Play).

Anyone under the age of 13 will need their parent or carer to set up an account first. This is due to safety guidelines over location tracking. The parent/carer can then add additional family members via a family management feature. If you're playing with the app, you can add family members using cards by tapping their card against your phone when prompted.

To check a player's progress, the adult logs into the account and switches between connected player profiles.

Please note that while parent and child profiles can be connected to view progress and manage the family, players can only get points by using their own card or app. You cannot collect points on behalf of other family members.

When signing up, you'll receive a verification email that you should click through. If you don't receive this email, you'll still be able to access your account and check your email details are correct via Manage Account. If the details are incorrect, you can amend them.

If you've signed up on our website, and then decide to take part using our Beat the Street mobile app, you just login to the app with the login you created on the website. No need to sign up again.

Please note - 1 week before the game ends, you will no longer be able to sign up.

You can play in one of two ways:

• By using a Beat the Street game card at physical Beat Boxes fixed to lampposts across your area. Adults and children can both play this way.
• By downloading our Beat the Street App. Players 13+ can download the app and collect points at virtual Beat Boxes across the area (located in the same position as physical Beat Boxes). Children can play by tapping their card on their parent/carer's phone when prompted. However, they can still choose to take part by tapping their card on the physical Beat Box.

Schools will hand out game material to children aged 11 and under. This will include a card for the child, a card for a parent/carer and a map. Participating schools begin distributing these to pupils in the week leading up to the game.

Players over the age of 13 can choose to play with the app rather than a card. Follow the instructions for downloading the app and sign up an account via the app, or alternatively if you've created an account already via the website, login. You can then add your child as a player profile and connect their card to their account. A child must use a card even if playing via their parent's app.

Adults can help support a school team or join/set up a community team. This could be a team for your local club, workplace or even a big group of friends. Alternatively, you can also choose to play for a local charity, and your points will help them reach their donation goal.

If choosing to play with a card and not playing with a school, collect a card from a local distribution point. When you've collected a card, just create an account online, connect your card to the account and get swiping. Find out where to collect a card.

The Beat the Street mobile app is a new way to play! Instead of playing with a card, players over the age of 13 can use their mobile device to sign up, connect family members and earn Beat Box points.

App players can also access exclusive features!

No! After downloading the app simply login using the same details you used to sign up on the website.

If you’ve received a card from your school, you should have also received a card for a parent to play with. Remember, the two cards are not linked to each other.

Each individual card will need to be connected to a different player profile.

If you're playing with the app and wish to add a card to your child's account so that they can play with you, visit Account, Family Management, and choose Add Family. Fill in the requested details and tap the card against the phone when prompted.

Cards that are handed out by schools come pre-assigned to the school team and do not need to be registered online in order to join the school team. However, to check your points and mileage and be in with a chance to win individual prizes, you will need to link your card to a player profile. Parents or carers should set up an account first and then add family members to their account. You'll be able to switch between profiles. Find out more here.

Cards collected at distribution points must be linked to an account in order to join a team and to be in with a chance to win lucky box prizes. You will also then be able to monitor your performance online and see your journeys.

1 week before the game ends, you will no longer be able to link a card to your account.

Check out the map and find your nearest Beat Box. Hover your card in front of the Box for 2-5 seconds until the Box beeps and flashes. This starts your journey!

To collect 10 points for your first Box, players need to visit a second Beat Box within 60 minutes. Walk, cycle or wheel to a Box, and swipe it to complete the journey. You'll score 10 points for your first Box, along with a further 10 points for this Beat Box - this is 20 points collected for the whole journey.

Note - there must be a time gap of at least 1 minute between visiting Beat Boxes, or the second box will not register points.

Keep going! You’ll score 10 points for every subsequent Beat Box you visit, as long as you get to the Box within 60 minutes. You can go back to the same Box as much or as little as you like, just make sure you visit a different Beat Box in between. If more than 60 minutes passes between visiting Beat Boxes, then the next Beat Box you swipe will act as the ‘start’ point. The process will begin again.

Check out the map to see where Beat Boxes are located and find your nearest to get started. Walk, cycle or wheel to your first Beat Box to kick off the game.

When you come within 10 metres of a Beat Box, you'll see a screen on your app pop up telling you to collect the points. You can tap the Beat Box icon if this doesn't pop up. Slide the button to collect the points. This starts your journey!

You then have 60 minutes to get to your next Box and collect points. Hurry! Get there before the time runs out or miss out on points! To collect the points for your first Box, players need to visit a second Beat Box within the time limit. Walk, cycle or wheel to a Box, and swipe the button that pops up on the app to collect the points. You'll score 10 points for your first Box, along with a further 10 points for this Beat Box - this is 20 points collected for the whole journey.

Note - there must be a time gap of at least 1 minute between visiting Beat Boxes, or the second box will not register points.

For a child to collect the points, they can tap their card on their parent/carer's app when the app is open at the Box. You'll see the option to "scan a card player". Tap your card against the phone when prompted. Please note - a child refers to anyone under the age of 13.

Score points for each extra Box you visit. While the time counts down, look for gems - you'll only be able to see them when the timer is running.

App users can collect Gems! Gems are scattered across the Beat the Street map. Discover new places in your local area and find gems - build up your collection and see how many you can gather.

Gems are a new feature in Beat the Street that are only available in the app. They have a different Leaderboard and scoring method than Beat Boxes and are intended to extend the geography of the game and offer a fun new way to play.

You’ll only be able to collect Gems after you collect points from your first Beat Box in a game session. To collect a Gem, just visit the location on the map and they'll automatically be added to your account. Keep an eye on the countdown clock in the top right corner of the screen, while it's running try and collect as many Gems as possible. To refresh the countdown clock before it runs out just find another Beat Box to swipe!

A child can collect a Gem by tapping their card on their parent's Beat the Street app when prompted.

There are 5 different types of Gem for you to discover and add to your Gem wallet. Each type scores different points with the higher point Gems rarer to find:

• Amber - 10 points
• Cyan - 20 points
• Emerald - 30 points
• Purple - 40 points
• Ruby - 50 points

Card players can also collect Gem points if they are out playing with a Beat the Street mobile app player - as long as the profiles are connected via the app. The app player will receive a prompt when they collect a Gem to collect for card players they are playing with. Just slide your card on the back of their phone to collect that Gem and the points.

If you're not using the app, you won't be able to collect Gems. This is an exclusive app-only feature.

If you're using our mobile app, you'll be able to choose an avatar. This is an icon or character that represents you. To change this, visit Account > Edit Profile and then choose Change Avatar and select a character from the drop down.

Beat the Street: Be Covid Safe

Beat the Street is low-risk, contactless and easy to play whilst maintaining social distancing. It is created by Intelligent Health, a team of physical health experts led by Dr William Bird, a GP working on the NHS frontline against Covid-19. Beat the Street is played outdoors individually, with your household or in small groups according to current COVID-19 guidelines.

• Beat the Street Beat Boxes are contactless so it’s a perfect way to exercise and have fun with friends outdoors

• Don’t touch cards belonging to others

• As always, wash your hands with soap and water for 20 seconds when you return home.

You can collect a print map from a local distribution point. Find your nearest local distribution point.

Alternatively you can use the map on the Beat the Street app.

You can move to the app at any time. Just login with the same details you used to sign up on the website.

Equally, if you no longer wish to use the app, you can continue playing and monitoring your progress by logging in with the same credentials via our website and attaching a card to your account.

Awards are fun in-game challenges. If you complete the challenge you receive a reward. You can unlock an award automatically by earning points or playing the game on the way to and from work or school. Check out your dashboard to see what awards you have earned and which ones you can still play for. Can you make it all the way to Globetrotter or Planet Protector?

Status awards are unlocked when you reach a certain number of points

• Wanderer: 200 points
• Explorer: 400 points
• Adventurer: 800 points
• Globetrotter: 1600 points

Green Commute awards are unlocked when you collect points on weekdays between 7am-9am and 3pm-6pm

• Planet Pal: 200 points
• Planet Hero: 400 points
• Planet Protector: 800 points

Can you collect them all?

Yes, everyone who creates a player profile will be added to the individual leaderboard. Please bear this in mind when creating your username. If you create a username using swearwords or inappropriate terms, your profile will be removed.

Yes you can manage your details by visiting Manage Account.

When you first link your card, you will have a choice of teams. Look in the drop down list to find a type of team followed by the name of the team. Players can join any team, and everyone is invited! Get all of your friends and family involved, including brothers, sisters and grandparents.

If you don't join a team when you link your card, you can do this by going to "Manage Account" via the menu and selecting your team.

If you would like to create your own team, request one during registration or by visiting Manage Account. You'll see an option to either join a team or create one. Follow the on screen instructions. A member of our team will be in touch to confirm your team has been set up. Please remember that you need to recruit at least 12 team members by 23.59pm on 11 July to be eligible for leaderboard prizes.

Who can set up a team?

• Workplace
• Community Groups
• Sports Teams
• Clubs
• Unaffiliated groups e.g. a group of friends

Please note that families can not create teams, and should take part through the child's school team.

Team Leaders will be able to use the Beat the Street app to see who is in their team, though they'll only see public usernames. You can also follow friends and family to see them in a leaderboard list and watch your progress together.

Note - Teams will have until 23.59pm on 11 July to recruit a minimum of 12 participants. If you fail to do so by that date, your team can still take part and contribute to the town’s mileage but your team will not be eligible for the main leaderboard prizes. Your team will move from the main leaderboard to the Small Teams Leaderboard where you can compete for a trophy. You need at least 2 team members to move to that leaderboard.

Players will not be able to change teams in the final week of the game.

No, unfortunately you can only play for one team.

Yes! We welcome people of all ages and abilities to play Beat the Street. Disability should be no barrier to participation. If you are a wheelchair or mobility scooter user, please feel free to use these to get between Beat Boxes. Beat Boxes are placed approximately 500 – 600 metres apart and you have an hour to travel between two Boxes to earn your 10 points. You can also now play using our Beat the Street app. If you choose to use the app, you only need to come within 10 metres of the location to collect the points.

Visit our online map to plan your route. You can use our accessibility icons to see which Beat Boxes are accessible for wheelchair users and participants with mobility issues. If you need to take a break, why not use the map tool to plan your route and look for rest points.

The winner of the individual leaderboard will receive a trophy to recognise their achievement.

Based on feedback from other games across the UK, we have introduced an individual leaderboard where players can see their individual progress and compare with other players in the community. Anyone who creates an account will have their username on the leaderboard. No other information is shared but we welcome your comments to improve this area.

To play, everyone must have a game item - either a card or the Beat the Street App. For children, they must have their card with them to play and collect points by tapping their card against their parent/carer's phone when prompted.

Remember, Beat the Street is all about getting active and having fun outdoors so it's important that everyone who signs up participates fairly to get the most out of the game.

There are many reasons why your swipe may be displaying as 0 points on your account. Here are a few reasons why this might be:

• Points can be delayed in displaying on your account. Check again in a few hours and if they still haven't appeared, let us know. We need to know your card number to investigate as well as the Box numbers you visited at and the approximate times
• You did not visit a different Beat Box within 1 hour
• You did not leave 1 minute between visits
• If it was the first Box of your journey, you will always see 0 points until you have visited your second and completed a journey. Then you will see collect 10 points for your first Box and 10 for your second at that point.

Please note that if your swipe has not been recognised on a Box, or the Box was not working at the time of your swipe, we are unable to award those missing points to you.

The 100 point bonus for completing the health survey can take a few days to appear in your account.

This is a feature which we hope will encourage people to create an account or profile giving them a better experience of the game, a chance to use our new features and be in for a chance to win prizes.

People who complete the health profile section will earn 100 points as a thank you. The 100 point bonus can take up to 24 hours to appear in your account.

You can only see the number of points on a card when it has been linked to a profile on an account.

If you notice that the Box doesn’t beep or flash after you’ve held your card against it for a few seconds, please let us know by contacting our online helpdesk.

Please note that if your swipe has not been recognised on a Box, or the Box was not working at the time of your swipe, we are unable to award those missing points to you.

Check your online account to ensure that it isn’t working. Points are normally added to your account within the hour but sometimes there may be a delay – especially when everybody is out and about playing! Also double check that you are looking at the right profile for that card - with whole families taking part it can be easy to mix up information. If this all seems right and the problem continues email contact our online helpdesk and a member of our team will assist you.

Without having "Always On" it won't be possible for you to play the game. However, we only use the data from you playing the game with the app open. It also allows us to see how you are playing the game so we can make improvements to the game experience.

This helps us look at data from the app to see how people are playing the game and in the future help us prevent players playing unfairly and travelling in ways that are not in the spirit of the game.

If you lose your card, you may collect a new one from a distribution point and re-connect it to your existing player profile. If you need to do this, please contact us via our online helpdesk and we will amend your account. Any points you've collected on your lost card will still be on your account.

This is a fun competition about getting moving around your area – you can walk, run, cycle, wheel, scoot or skip. We want you to enjoy the competition and get the most out of it you can, so please don’t try to cheat the system – you’ve nothing to gain from doing so. It is against the rules to use a car or motorised vehicle to drive between Beat Boxes. Anyone found to be doing this, will have their points wiped.

E-bikes are allowed as part of Beat the Street as they do require the rider to pedal but e-scooters are not permitted. According to the government website, using privately owned e-scooters on public roads and pavements is currently against the law and could result in a fine. Some exceptions to this exist where trials are taking place but strict rules apply. Find out about E-scooter trials: government guidance. We will keep this under review as rules are updated.

Cheating also includes swiping more than one card per person or using someone else’s card as well as your own. If we suspect players to have done any of these we will contact them directly. We also strongly advise you not to be sharing cards in order to maintain good hygiene practices in light of the Covid-19 virus.

Report any incidents of cheating you may see. If you see another player cheating, swipe your card on the same Beat Box directly before or after they do. Then let us know the Beat Box number, the time you swiped and your card number via our online helpdesk. We will then be able to trace the card of the person suspected to be cheating.

Note - please do not take photos or video of other players without their consent. Any cheating complaints containing footage or images of players that have not consented will be deleted immediately.

Road Safety

Before you go out to play Beat the Street we recommend parents, teachers and community leaders look at THINK! road safety campaign - this is a one-stop resource for road safety education materials. We also recommend learning the Green Cross Code to ensure children are looking both ways and taking care when crossing roads. 

Visibility

Increase your visibility to help drivers and other road users to see you. Wear bright and fluorescent materials in daytime and reflective materials at night.

Use flashing lights on your bicycles, pedal reflectors and wear reflective coats, bags or high visibility vests. Use a white or brightly coloured cycle helmet or even one with a light! Don’t forget the family dog - use a high visibility lead and collar, harness or coat.

Phone Safety

Please stay aware of your surroundings when playing Beat the Street. Check your route and pop your phone away before you start moving.

If you need to use your phone, stop in a safe place out of the way of other road users.

Internet Safety

When engaging with Beat the Street via social media, please be aware that any comments, pictures or videos posted by the player are public and therefore viewable by anyone. As a result, parents should ensure that any information (such as address, contact details, etc) that could identify a child is not shared. If you need any further advice please refer to Internet Matters' resources for keeping children safe online.

Your Health

Make sure you exercise within your own limits. NHS walking for health guidance provides helpful tips for anyone new to walking or who have taken a break from exercise.

Consult your doctor before taking part if you have a history of health problems or experience any pain or discomfort when exercising.

Please always be aware of your surroundings when playing.

• Take care to ensure you are not trespassing on residents' driveways, and take care not to damage any property. When collecting Gems via the Beat the Street App, there is a radius around a Gem which means you don't have to go to the precise location to collect it. So there is no reason to stand in an unsafe location or tresspass.
• Respect local residents and other members of the public whilst playing
• Always keep the local Covid restrictions in mind - keep your distance from other players. Find out more about playing safely here.
• Be careful when crossing roads and make sure you are always visible to road users. Find out more about road safety here.

We want to encourage under 13 year olds away from screens while out playing as much as possible and we also don't want to be actively tracking the movements of under 13 years old for ethical and privacy reasons.
