Child-friendly privacy notice

Introduction

This is our privacy notice, which tells you how we use your personal data, so you know what happens with any data that you give to us.

You may find it helpful to ask an adult to read this with you to explain anything that you may find confusing.

This privacy notice explains:

  • how to ask for a copy of information we have about you
  • how to ask us to delete the information we have about you
  • how we keep your information
  • how we use your information
  • how we make sure the rules we follow to protect your information are as good as possible.

Who are we?

We are Intelligent Health and we run the Beat the Street game to help people live more active lives. We provide the Beat Boxes and set up events to get people playing Beat the Street during the six-week game. We also advise organisations in your area on how they may help people become more active. This may be, for example, suggesting activities to your local authority that people in your area have said they would like to help them get active.

What is personal data?

Anything that can identify you is your personal data. This includes information such as your name, a photo, your email address or your date of birth.

You only need to tell us information that you want to share with us and we will keep this data safe. There are some types of data you should be extra careful about sharing. These are known as special category data. These include information details of your views on politics, your religion, any illnesses or other information that your doctor or medical professionals have told you about your health. You may wish to ask an adult to look at this notice too before sharing any personal information if you don't understand anything.

Personal data can also include some information that is shared on tiny files called "cookies." Like lots of websites, the Beat the Street website downloads cookies onto your computer. Some of these help our website to work properly and others (called Google Analytics) let us understand what people look at on our website, so we can improve the website in the future. Google explains more on the Google support site.

You can stop your computer from having cookies put on it by going choosing to 'reject' some of the cookies — a pop-up message appears on the website when you first visit and you can change your settings by going to the little icon that looks like a paperclip on the left-hand side of the website. If you need help, please contact our Helpdesk team using the Help? widget and they will be happy to assist you.

If you want to read a list of all the data that we collect when you register with Beat the Street, complete a health survey or contact us on social media, you can find this on our Beat the Street privacy notice in sections 1-9.

Why do you need my personal data? What data do you collect?

The main reason we need to use your personal data is to understand the needs of you and people living in your area so we can help get you all more physically active and reduce health inequalities in your area.

We use information about your age, activity levels and where you live to understand where people need additional facilities or anything that may be stopping people living near you or people of your age group from being active.

We also collect your information to get in touch with you about the game and, if you have said you want to receive 'marketing' emails, we may contact you to tell you about competitions and events, information about how you can get active and reminders to complete surveys. You can find out more detail in the Beat the Street privacy notice.

We do not collect more information than is necessary. This is why we do not collect your exact date of birth (we only ask the month and year of birth) or your full home address (we only ask for your postcode and would only ask for your full address if you won a competition that required us to post you your prize).

You can still play Beat the Street without sharing any personal data, by playing with a card and not registering for an account online or via the App. If you have been given a card by your school to play as part of your school team, your points will automatically count towards your school's team and help them climb the leaderboard even if you have not registered. However, if you don't register, you are unable to see how many points you have compared to other people playing the game, you cannot take part in competitions, and you cannot share your opinions in our health survey.

We may send you reminders to complete our health surveys and post-game reports. Some of this information you may wish to be more careful about sharing, as explained in the 'What is personal data?' section of this notice. However, this information is only used for the purpose of reducing health inequalities by enabling local authorities to target groups of people who may be in need of additional assistance to get active. For example, some children who have additional needs may stipulate that provision of particular activities would help them get active. You may wish to seek the advice of an adult before you share this information.

Additional data collected through the Beat the Street App

You need to be older than 13 years of age if you wish to play Beat the Street using the Beat the Street App. To play using the app we need to know your location, which we can collect through your device; this is known as geolocation data.

  • You need to allow the app to 'always' access your location through your device to discover and collect Gems through the app.
  • You need to allow access to your location while you are using the app, to collect points from Beat Boxes and see your location on the map.
  • You can play Beat the Street without sharing your location by playing using a Beat the Street card instead of the App. You can pick up a card, free of charge, from a Distribution Point. The 'FAQs' section on 'Where can I pick up a card?' on the www.beatthestreet.me website lists where these Distribution Points can be found.

Can you use my personal data for anything?

We will only use your personal data to help and encourage people be more healthy and physically active.

We will make it clear to you when we are asking you to provide personal data and will ask your permission to do so. We explain the purpose of collecting this information through registration, when answering surveys etc. in sections 1-9 of the main Beat the Street privacy policy.

If we use any of your data, there are a lot of rules that we have to follow and we explain how we are following these rules in our main Beat the Street privacy notice.

Can anyone else see my personal data?

Sometimes in order to make communities more physically active, we need to share your personal data. We’re very careful about how we do this.

We may share some information about your activity levels or health but if we do, we make sure we do not share this with your name, email, or exact post code so anyone we share this with should not be able to know who you are. There are lots of rules that we follow before we share any information.

We also only share this information with organisations who run the Beat the Street game with us. These organisations will be your local authority or an organisation that helps improve health and wellbeing services in your area and they agree to rules about using any data that we share with them. They will also have rules that they follow to help protect your data.

There are too many people to list here, but there is a longer list of who we could share with on our Beat the Street privacy notice.

Do you keep my personal data forever?

We only keep your personal data for as long as we need it for the purpose that we have talked about above. This could be kept for years, but we do remove the more personal data, such as your email address and name, much sooner. We explain how long we keep your data in the section 'How long will my data be kept for?' section of the Beat the Street privacy notice.

Can I say in what happens to my personal data?

Yes you can say what we should do with your data and you only tell us information that you are happy to share. You have many rights and one of these is the right to know what we do with your data.

You can ask us to tell you what personal data we have about you, or if you want us to stop using it or delete it. You can contact us via the Help? widget on the Beat the Street website or read more about this in the Beat the Street privacy notice.

Who makes sure you follow all the rules?

We follow the latest rules about this which are part of the law from 2018 onwards, including the Data Protection Act and the General Data Protection Regulations 2018. We also have regular meetings with the Data Protection People who act as our Data Protection Officer and tell us how we can protect your data. They make sure we are following all rules to keep your data is safe.

We know how important it is to keep your data safe. If you want to ask us any questions about data protection, you can contact the Data Protection People.
